UCF Blazes Past UAB For Another C-USA Victory

ORLANDO - Outside hitters Maina Heming and Lorin Lukas both posted double-doubles to lift the UCF volleyball team to a 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 31-29, 30-28) Conference USA victory over UAB on Friday evening at the UCF Arena. The Golden Knights (4-5, 2-0) have claimed two consecutive contests, both in league play. With the loss, UAB falls to 9-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Lukas recorded a career-high 16 kills and also added 12 digs. On the way to her second straight double-double, Heming totaled a career-best 17 digs and also had 11 kills. Fellow outside hitter Schanell Neiderworder added 13 kills and a career-best seven total blocks.

The Golden Knights won the match despite losing the first game for the second time in as many contests.

"Once again, we started from behind, but were able to capture the victory. That is always a good sign," said UCF head coach Meg Colado. "Our outside hitters did a fantastic job and really kept us in the match."

UCF setter Leah Alexander tallied a career-high 46 assists and chipped in with nine digs. Libero Katie Kohnen had a match-high 14 digs.

The Golden Knights recorded 15 total team blocks. Middle blockers Jenny Heppert and Jana Mitchell combined for 12 total blocks.

As a team, UCF posted a .245 hitting percentage compared to .205 for UAB.

Isabel Oquendo registered a double-double for the Blazers with 16 kills and 13 digs. Casey Dent had 12 kills and six blocks and Ivana Bozic totaled 11 kills. Nevena Stefanov posted 44 assists in the losing effort.

The Golden Knights close out a three-match homestand on Sunday afternoon, hosting Memphis for a C-USA contest at 1 p.m. Prior to the match, school officials will be collecting donations to aid those in need after Hurricane Katrina. All proceeds will be given to the United Way.
