An improved second round put UCF in position for a strong finish, but a final round 12-over-par 300 dropped UCF into a tie for 12th in the final standings at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at the Shoal Creek Golf Club. LSU won the inaugural event by one shot over Tennessee after posting a 1-under-par 863 total.
Host UAB finished third, followed by East Tennessee and Georgia State. Florida and Florida State finished seventh and eighth, respectively. East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies and Tennessee's Jonathan Mount were declared co-champions after playing even on a four-hole playoff. Notre Dame's Cole Isban was knocked out on the first playoff hole. The trio finished the 54-hole tournament at six-under par, 210.
UCF finished the second round, which was halted by darkness Monday night, early Tuesday morning and had moved solidly inside the top 10 with a 4-over-par 292, but the Golden Knights were unable to keep that momentum in the final round.
Ben Leong led the way for UCF in the second round with a 3-under-par 69, but a 3-over-par 75 Tuesday afternoon dropped him into a tie for 20th in the final standings with teammate Chris Anderson. The pair finished the 54-hole event at 3-over-par 219.
"It's been a disappointing start to the year so far," UCF coach Nick Clinard said. "We have had some poor finishes in the first two events, but I believe things will turn around. We have a very talented team and will continue to work on the things that will make us better."
