ORLANDO, Fla. - Roberta Pelarigo scored two goals as the UCF women's soccer team defeated Florida International, 4-0, Friday night. The Golden Knights improved to 3-6-0, while the Golden Panthers fell to 2-3-3.
"This win was huge," said head coach Amanda Cromwell. "As much as we played well in some of those games that we lost it still does not make you feel any better. We needed to get out of that slump and get the monkey off our back. Getting the win makes us feel like we are back."
Pelarigo scored her first goal of the night at the 8:57 mark when Jessica Hallgren took a free kick and sent it toward the goal. Pelarigo then headed the ball in to give the Golden Knights the early lead.
Pelarigo added a second goal in the first half when Courtney Baines set a corner kick up in front of the goal for Shannon Wing to head to Pelarigo.
Jennifer Montgomery netted the Golden Knights' third goal of the half when Stacey George dribbled up the field and passed. Montgomery was then one on one with the goalkeeper to give UCF a 3-0 lead.
At the end of the first half, UCF held a slight advantage in shots (12-11) and corner kicks (3-2), while the two teams were tied in fouls with eight a piece. Beth Harless had four saves in the net for the Golden Knights with one team save, while Laura Snell had three for the Golden Panthers.
With 40 seconds left in the match, Hallgren sent a free kick screaming past Snell for UCF's fourth and final goal of the night.
For the match, the Golden Knights outshot the Golden Panthers, 28-16. Pelarigo paced UCF with seven shots, four shots on goal and two assists, while Hallgren had two shots, one shot on goal, one goal and one assist.
Harless recorded her first shut-out of the season with seven saves.
UCF returns to the turf on Friday, Sept. 30 when Southern Miss comes to town for the first Conference USA match. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
