ORLANDO - An early goal by freshman Ryan Adeleye gave the No. 23 Davidson men's soccer team (4-1-1) a 1-0 shutout of UCF (3-1) in the first round of the UCF adidas Classic on Friday night at the UCF Soccer Complex.
Adeleye put the Wildcats on the board in 15th minute. The play began when senior Matt Allen's original shot was blocked away by UCF senior goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh, but Adeleye corralled the rebound and scored low to the far side.
Two minutes later, the Golden Knights nearly tied the game when a shot by senior forward Jon Imran was mishandled by Wildcat Ben Ashton.
Davidson outshot UCF, 16-10, in the match as both teams continued to earn chances and forced the keepers to come up with big saves. McIntosh, who made nine saves, stopped a point blank shot by sophomore Tom Lavan in the opening seconds of the second half.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Ashton and the Davidson defense halted a direct kick by UCF senior captain Billy Judino in the box at the 78th minute.
The match was highly contested as the two team combined for 33 fouls, three cautions and two ejections.
"Davidson is a good team, but I was extremely disappointed in the loss," said Golden Knights' head coach Brent Erwin. "We need to be able to learn from our mistakes, regroup and get ready to play a good game against a tough Hofstra team on Sunday."
Earlier in the evening, Jacksonville (3-2) earned a 2-1 win over Hofstra (3-2) behind two unassisted goals by Tommy Krizanovic.
The UCF adidas Classic continues on Sunday when Jacksonville faces Davidson at 11 a.m. followed by UCF against Hofstra at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the UCF Soccer Complex.
