Football Fan Day a Success

Aug. 24, 2005

ORLANDO - UCF supporters had the opportunity to mingle with Golden Knights on Saturday when the school hosted its annual Football Fan Day.

"This year's fan day was the best yet," said Gert Garman, UCF director of sports marketing and promotions. "I believe it had to do with the fact that we had the event on campus and were able to promote the new facilities."

Approximately 2,000 fans showed up to take pictures with coaches, players and UCF's mascot, Knightro.

Fans were able to pick up their football season tickets along with media guides while they enjoyed BBQ from Sonny's.

In addition to pictures with coaches and players, fans also stood in line to have their picture taken with a sign placed on the 50-yard line of the proposed football stadium. The sign read, "Look at me, I'm standing on the 50-yard line of the proposed on-campus football stadium."

"When we went to get the sign at the end of the afternoon, we found that the sign had walked away," said Garman.

The event also marked the debut of Knightro's new car. His new wheels are courtesy of the UCF School of Engineering. Five mechanical engineering majors built the car as a senior project.

The UCF football team will open the 2005 season on Sept. 1 when the squad travels to South Carolina to play the Gamecocks at 7:45 p.m. on ESPN.
