ORLANDO - The UCF football team held its fifth practice in six days inside the Nicholson Fieldhouse Friday afternoon. With lightning in the area for the entire practice, the Golden Knights worked out from beginning to end for the first time indoors in full pads.
The practice featured a mix of individual team periods along with several team periods near the conclusion of practice.
In one-on-one pass protection drills, the defensive line looked to get the best of the offensive line. Several Golden Knights on the defensive front won the individual battles to earn the sack on the would-be quarterback. Senior Frisner Nelson, senior Glenroy Watkins and sophomore Keith Shologan were three of the defensive linemen who registered sacks during the period.
As the practice shifted to team periods of work, the Golden Knights went through several team pressure periods. During the drills, the offense worked on protecting vs. the blitz while the defense used several blitz packages and coverage schemes.
Junior quarterback Steven Moffett was efficient during the pressure period and did not commit an interception during the drill. He hit senior tight end Darcy Johnson on several big yardage plays vs. the first team defense.
The defense recorded two interceptions during the action, including redshirt freshman Jason Venson and redshirt freshman Keith Williams.
Practice ended with both the offense and defense running vs. the clock in wind sprints across the field and back.
UCF returns to the field Saturday for a pair of practices. The first session is scheduled from 9-11:10 a.m. in helmets and shoulder pads. Saturday's evening practice (7:30-9:15 p.m.) will be held in full pads. Fans wishing to attend are reminded that cameras (digital, video, etc.) are prohibited from the practice field.
