O'Leary Announces Football Staff Changes at UCF

June 13, 2005

ORLANDO - UCF head football coach George O'Leary announced Monday that tight ends coach Eric Green has resigned due to family issues. With the vacancy created by Green's resignation, George Godsey has been named UCF's quarterbacks coach while Tim Salem will continue to serve as offensive coordinator and also as the tight ends coach. O'Leary also named Brent Key as UCF's offensive graduate assistant coach for the 2005 season while Thomas Balkcom has been named the defensive graduate assistant.

"I wish Eric and his family well in the future," stated O'Leary. "He has done a terrific job with our tight ends and will be missed on the staff."

Godsey served as UCF's offensive graduate assistant coach last season. "If you hire the right people initially, you can promote from within your program and I always look to do that," added O'Leary.

Godsey was a former all-ACC quarterback under O'Leary. At Georgia Tech, Godsey was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference and Academic All-ACC signal caller whose two years as a starter were two of the most productive seasons in Georgia Tech history.

Godsey set the school record for career completion percentage (.633) and ranks second in career pass efficiency rating (143.64).The rating is also the fifth best mark in ACC annals. He is still one of the most accomplished passers in Georgia Tech history, as he ranks third in Tech history in virtually every other quarterback category, behind only Joe Hamilton and Shawn Jones, both four-year starters.

He stands third in career passing yards (6,137), touchdown passes (41), completions (484) and total offense (6,125). He finished his career in the Top 20 in ACC history in career passing yards (15th) and total offense (19th).

Key is set to begin his first year as an offensive graduate assistant coach at UCF. A former standout at Georgia Tech under O'Leary, Key was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets at right guard.

Key was an all-conference lineman and one of the anchors of the Tech offense. During his four-year career, he helped Tech rank in the top three in the ACC in rushing all four years. Key started 43 games for the Jackets and was part of a senior class that has earned four straight bowl berths, a first for the Tech program since 1951-56. Key played in the Rotary Gridiron Classic in Orlando, Fla., following his senior season.

Balkcom was a two-year starter at strong safety at Georgia Tech from 1987-90. A three-time letterman at Tech, Balkcom was part of the 1990 team that finished 11-0-1 and won the National Championship with a victory over Nebraska at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Balkcom has coached on both the high school and collegiate levels, including stints at Morris Brown College on the I-AA level from 1999-2000 and at Morehouse College from 2001-03. Balkcom coached the defensive backs during his tenure at Morris Brown while he tutored the linebackers at Morris Brown.
