BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic's Ashley Greene throws a shutout to defeat the UCF, 3-0, at the 2005 Atlantic Sun Softball Tournament. The Golden Knights fall to 42-27-1 on the season, while the Owls improve to 37-30 on the season.
Bryttani Lindheim led the Knights at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles, while Lindsay Enders was tagged with the lose in the circle. Enders (22-13) pitched the complete game giving up three unearned runs on seven hits, five walks and two strikeouts.
Florida Atlantic jumped out to an early 3-run lead in the top of the first, capped off by a Jessica Braggins RBI double to center field, scoring Pam Mazzarella. Danielle Arriaga followed Braggins' double up with an RBI single to center field, advancing to second on the throw home and then to third on an error. Jenn Piazza singled to right field scoring Arriaga.
The Golden Knights threatened in their half of the first when Jania Shinhoster walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. Cici Alvarez then moved Shinhoster over to third on a bunt single. On a failed squeeze play, Shinhoster was gunned down at third, stopping UCF's drive.
In the bottom of the sixth, UCF loaded the bases but were unable to bring a run across.
At the end of the game, FAU defeated UCF, 3-0. The Owls were led by Charlotte Baird who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles, while Greene went the distance in the circle. Greene (13-8) gave up five hits on two walks and five strikeouts.
The Golden Knights return to the softball diamond tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. taking on Jacksonville. All of UCF's games at the tournament will be broadcast live via the internet at www.ucfathletics.com along with live stats.
