MACON, Ga. - UCF swept the Atlantic Sun Conference all-sports trophies for the third year in a row, winning both the 2004-05 Jesse C. Fletcher and Sherman Day awards, the league office announced Monday. Both awards are presented annually to the top men's and women's athletic programs throughout the academic year.
UCF is currently in its final campaign in the A-Sun. Next year, the school moves to Conference USA.
"Winning the Jesse C. Fletcher and Sherman Day awards three years in a row is a tremendous accomplishment," said UCF Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "Not only has UCF experienced great success on the playing field, but our student-athletes have also achieved success academically. These awards are a tribute to the hard work and dedication from our student-athletes, coaches and staff."
The Golden Knights earned the Jesse C. Fletcher trophy, given to the top men's program, for the sixth time since joining the A-Sun in 1992. Even though two weeks remain in the baseball regular season, UCF has already clinched the title.
With 153 points in 2004-05, UCF has won the conference regular season soccer and basketball championships, in addition to the tennis crown.
Georgia State stands in second place with 133.5 points, while Belmont (127.5) is third.
On the women's side, UCF claimed its fourth consecutive and seventh Sherman Day trophy since 1995. The Golden Knights won the regular season basketball and track and field championships. UCF has totaled 227.5 points this year, just a half-of-a-point shy of the record that the school established last season.
Florida Atlantic (214.5) and Georgia State (193.5) follow the Golden Knights in the women's standings.
Teams are awarded points based on regular season finish in team sports and championship finish in individual sports. The points are awarded in descending order in three-point increments, beginning at 33 for the win, with all ties splitting the points.
