ORLANDO - UCF athletics director Steve Orsini announced the hiring of Brent Erwin as head men's soccer coach Sunday.
Erwin comes to UCF from SMU, where he spent the last six years as an assistant coach. During that time, the Mustangs compiled an 86-19-7 record and earned six NCAA Tournament berths. After advancing to the NCAA Final Four in 2000, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for 14 straight weeks and went as far as the Elite Eight in 2001. Last season, SMU owned a 16-4-1 record and made the Sweet Sixteen.
During his tenure, Erwin's recruiting classes were consistently ranked among the nation's top five. He aided in the development of seven All-Americans and 20 all-conference honorees as well as 2001 Hermann Award Winner Luchi Gonzalez. The players' pursuit of excellence continued off the field as the SMU men's soccer program boasted a perfect academic progress rate (APR) of 1000.
His accomplishments with SMU have garnered Erwin recognition as one of the top assistant coaches in the country by College Soccer News the past three years.
Prior to his position with the Mustangs, Erwin served as assistant coach at Bradenton IMG Soccer Academy. He has also worked with the Under-17 Men's National Team and the Region 3 Olympic Development Program.
"Brent has a great deal of recruiting experience and strong ties in the state of Florida," Orsini said. "He also understands UCF's philosophy of developing well-rounded student-athletes. His focus on helping his players excel on the field and in the classroom will be an asset to the continued growth of our men's soccer program as we make the transition to Conference USA this fall."
