BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Stephanie Best was 2-for-2 at the plate for UCF as the Golden Knights defeated Campbell 6-2 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Knights improved to 32-19-1 on the season and 5-2 in the Atlantic Sun, while the Fighting Camels fell to 22-19 on the season and 3-8 in the A-Sun.
Best had two singles and two walks for the Knights, while Nikki Green was 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Lindsay Enders went the distance in the circle for UCF picking up her 15th win of the season.
The Golden Knights scored four runs in the top of the third on five singles and two walks. Jania Shinhoster, Best, Enders, Crystle Krafft and Green all had the singles in the inning, while Cici Alvarez and Cat Snapp drew the walks.
The Black and Gold added another run in the top of the fourth when Shinhoster led off with a single to right center. Alvarez advanced Shinhoster to second on a sac bunt. Bryttani Lindheim then singled to left field moving Shinhoster to third. Best then scored Shinhoster on a single to left center.
Campbell plated one run in the bottom of the fifth when Corri Long led off with a double to left center followed by a bunt single by Ashley Marley. The Fighting Camels tried a double steal with Long and Marley only to have Long thrown out at home. Amy Anderson moved Marley over to third on a single to left field. Marley scored when Anderson stole second. The next two batters then flied out.
UCF plated another run in the top of the sixth. Alvarez led off the inning with a single to left field and then stole second. Lindheim reached first on an error by the shortstop only to be thrown out at second, advancing Alvarez to third. The Fighting Camels then intentionally walked Best giving the Golden Knights runners on the corners. Best stole second putting two runners in scoring position. Krafft singled, scoring Alvarez from third with Best being thrown out at home.
The Fighting Camels fought back in the bottom of the seventh scoring one run on one hit but it was not enough to overcome the Knights lead.
At the end of game one, UCF had six runs on 13 hits with two errors, while Campbell had two runs on five hits and three errors.
Lindsay Landry led the Fighting Camels at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Lexi Myers was tagged with loss after pitching 2.2 innings and giving up four runs on five hits.
The second game of the doubleheader is currently in a lightning delay with the teams scheduled to take the field again around 8 p.m.
