Pittsburgh Signs Former UCF WR Tavaris Capers

April 25, 2005

ORLANDO - Former UCF wide receiver Tavaris Capers has inked a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Miami native ranked second on the team in 2004 with 36 receptions for 514 yards for the Golden Knights.

Capers is the second UCF player to sign a free agent contract, joining Alex Haynes. Haynes signed with Pittsburgh's AFC North rival Baltimore earlier in the day.

In 2004, Capers started in seven of the 11 games he played in. He led UCF with four touchdown receptions and finished his career tied for sixth in school history with 17 touchdown catches.

Also an elusive punt returner, Capers is second in the UCF annals with two career punt return touchdowns. His long return of 54 yards was returned for a touchdown in 2004 at Penn State.

Capers ended his career with 157 receptions for 1,717 yards in five seasons at UCF. He played only one game in 2000 due to injury and was awarded a medical redshirt.
