HOUSTON, Texas - UCF sophomore pitcher Tim Bascom has been added to the Watch List for the Roger Clemens Award, given annually to the nation's best pitcher. Bascom is in the midst of a stellar sophomore campaign, leading UCF with an 8-2 record and 3.26 ERA.
The sophomore right-hander has made a smooth transition from the bullpen in 2004 to UCF's No. 1 starter in 2005. In 77.1 innings of work, Bascom has 84 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .233 against him.
Bascom is the second UCF hurler in two years to be named to the Clemens Award Watch List. In 2004, Matt Fox was named to the list en route to a consensus All-America season.
Bascom's best start of the season came in a complete-game effort win over Siena. He struck out a career-high 17 batters vs. the Saints, one strikeout shy of the school record. The 17-strikeout performance also earned a National Player of the Week award by Collegiate Baseball News for his efforts.
As of April 17, Bascom ranked second in the NCAA in wins with eight. Bascom and the Golden Knights return to action Friday evening vs. Florida Atlantic. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Jay Bergman Field.
