ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF softball team travels to Tallahassee, Fla. where the squad will take on Florida State Wednesday evening before heading to Georgia to play Georgia State on Friday and Mercer on Sunday. The Black and Gold enter the road trip with a 34-20-1 record on the season and 7-3 mark in the Atlantic Sun, while the Florida State Seminoles come in with a 24-16 season mark and 6-5 record in the ACC. The Lady Panthers of Georgia State are 15-27 for the season and 4-6 in the A-Sun, while the Mercer Bears own a 21-25 season mark and 2-6 A-Sun mark.
Stephanie Best paces the UCF offense with a .342 batting average, 19 home runs, 44 RBI and 112 total bases. She has a team-high slugging percentage of .767. Jania Shinhoster leads the team in hits with 54 and is second in batting average at .335 with nine doubles, three triples and two home runs.
Lindsay Enders and Kelly McIntyre anchor the pitching staff with a combined record of 27-15. Enders is 16-10 with a 1.65 ERA, while McIntyre is 11-5 with a 2.39 ERA. Enders leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 142 as opponents are only hitting .192 against her.
Last time out, UCF took two from Gardner-Webb on Sunday in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Golden Knights defeated the Bulldogs 5-0 in the first game, followed by an 11-2 win in game two.
Enders led the Black and Gold at the plate, going 5-for-8 with two doubles, one home run, one run and four RBI. Enders also earned the win in game one, giving up five hits in seven innings, while striking out 14 and walking two. Ashley Baker picked up the win in game two, giving up two runs on four hits and four strikeouts.
Florida State is led offensively by Melissa Wood. The Lilburn, Ga. native is batting .304 with five home runs and five doubles. She also leads the Noles in slugging percentage (.522).
As a team, Florida State is hitting .247 with 16 home runs.
Tiffany McDonald and Casey Hunter lead the pitching staff with a combined record of 24-15. McDonald's record is 12-3 with an ERA of 1.34. She has given up 35 runs on 81 hits in 115 innings. Hunter owns a 12-12 record in the circle with a 1.42 ERA. She has given up 52 runs on 104 hits in 152.1 innings. Hunter tops the pitching staff in strikeouts with 207.
The Seminoles have a team ERA of 1.65 in 272.1 innings. Florida State has given up 98 runs on 199 hits, while striking out 314 and walking 148.
Last time out for Florida State, the Seminoles swept visiting Virginia Tech in three games. Lesley Palmer led the Seminoles at the plate going 3-for-5. Hunter earned two of the three wins, while McDonald picked up the third.
This will be the sixth time that UCF and Florida State have met on the softball diamond with the Seminoles leading the series, 5-0. The last time that these two teams met was on April 10, 2004 in Orlando with the Seminoles defeating the Golden Knights, 2-1 and 3-2. Best led the Black and Gold at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one double, one single, one RBI, two runs and two RBI. Enders and Taylor Sawyer were tagged for the losses in the circle for UCF.
Georgia State is led offensively by Lauren Morlock. The Lilburn, Ga. native is batting .300 with two doubles, three RBI and 12 runs. Candace Jones leads the Lady Panthers in home runs (2) and slugging percentage (.398).
As a team, Georgia State is hitting .226 with 10 home runs.
Elizabeth Hyman leads the pitching staff with an 11-14 record and a 1.27 ERA. Hyman has given up 54 runs on 117 hits, 56 walks and 187 strikeouts in 165 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .197 against her.
The Lady Panthers have a team ERA of 2.47 in 281 innings. Georgia State has given up 264 hits, while striking out 301.
Last time out, Georgia State split with Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville in Florida on April 10th. The Lady Panthers took game one 7-1, while the Dolphins took game two 1-0. Jessica Gowin led the Lady Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-6 with one double, two singles and one RBI. Hyman was tagged with both the win and the loss for the two games.
This will be the 10th time that UCF and Georgia State have met on the diamond with the Black and Gold leading the series, 7-2. The last time that these two teams met was on April 17, 2004 in Orlando with the Golden Knights defeating the Lady Panthers, 4-1 and 2-0. Best led the Black and Gold at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one triple, one double, one single, one walk, one run scored and two RBI. Enders and Sawyer earned the wins for UCF.
Mercer is led offensively by Jamie Madruga. The Warner Robbins, Ga. native is batting .362 with five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 13 RBI and 15 runs. The freshman is also leading the team in slugging percentage (.638).
As a team, Mercer is hitting .281 with 33 home runs.
Katie Rosentreter leads the pitching staff with a 15-13 record and a 1.25 ERA. Rosentreter has given up 64 runs on 130 hits, 30 walks and 167 strikeouts in 167.1 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .201 against her.
The Bears have a team ERA of 2.51 in 284 innings. Mercer has given up 276 hits, while striking out 255.
Last time out, Mercer was swept by Atlantic Sun rival Stetson in DeLand, Fla. on April 10th. The Bears dropped the first game 5-4 and the second game 11-1 in five innings. Madruga led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one double and two singles. Rosentreter earned the win in game one, while Jennifer Faierson picked up the loss in game two.
This will be the ninth time that UCF and Mercer have met on the softball diamond with the Golden Knights leading the series, 5-3. The last time that these two teams met was on May 13, 2004 at the 2004 Atlantic Sun Championship in Boca Raton, Fla. with the Knights defeating the Bears, 5-2. Cici Alvarez led the Black and Gold at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two singles and two runs scored. Enders picked up the win for the Knights.
The Golden Knights return home on Saturday, April 23 when the team hosts Jacksonville for Senior Day. The ceremony is set for 1:30 p.m. with the first pitch to follow at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all UCF softball games.
