Orlando - The UCF men's tennis team has earned the third seed at the 2005 Atlantic Sun Championships, scheduled for April 14-17 in DeLand, Fla. The Golden Knights will play the No. 6 Florida Atlantic/No. 11 Gardner-Webb winner in the quarterfinals on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Earl Brown City Courts. UCF (11-8) will be looking for its third consecutive A-Sun Championship crown. Head coach Bobby Cashman's squad has won three straight matches and finished the regular season with a 2-1 mark against league foes.
During the spring campaign, the Golden Knights have excelled at the top of the lineup. At No. 1, junior Ener Gursoy is 8-4. Senior Joel Allen has split time between the top two spots and is 12-5 overall.
Fellow senior Antonio Sierra, the school's all-time leader in singles victories, has posted a 10-0 record at No. 4. He was claimed 11 straight matches. In his first season at UCF, sophomore Sebastian Delgado is a perfect 8-0 at the No. 5 position.On the doubles side, Allen and Sierra are 13-3, with all but one of their wins coming at No. 1.
Troy is the top seed at the event and Georgia State is seeded second. The league champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Golden Knights will be participating in their final A-Sun Championship. Next season, the program moves to Conference USA.
