March 29, 2005

MACON, Ga. - For the second consecutive week, a UCF student-athlete was recognized by the Atlantic Sun as senior Antonio Sierra was named the league's men's tennis player of the week on Tuesday.

The Juarez, Mexico native claimed two singles victories for the Golden Knights at the No. 4 position. He started the week with a 3-6, 7-6, 10-7 win over Kiril Tcherveniachki of 21st-ranked Tennessee on Tuesday.

With the win against the Volunteers, Sierra established a school record with 72 career singles victories, passing former teammate Johan Westin.

On Saturday versus Pacific, Sierra took a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over Vladimir Zdravkovic. He has claimed nine consecutive matches and is 11-4 in dual-match play this year.

Sierra is the third Golden Knight to earn a weekly honor this season. Junior Ener Gursoy claimed the award last week.

The award marked the third time in Sierra's career that he has garnered A-Sun Player of the Week honors. He previously won the award on March 26, 2003 and on Feb. 17, 2004.

UCF concludes its 2005 home schedule on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Arkansas-Little Rock. Admission to the match at the UCF Tennis Complex is free.
