Women's Rowing to Race for Petrakis Cup

March 25, 2005

ORLANDO - For the first time during the 2005 season, the entire UCF women's rowing team will compete in the same regatta when the Golden Knights travel to Petrakis Cup in Jacksonville on Saturday.

In addition to the Knights, the regatta also features Jacksonville University, Tulane and Embry Riddle. UCF will be doubling up in most of the races, which take place on the St. John's River.

Starting off the regatta at 8:15 a.m., both the Varsity Eight and the Junior Varsity Eight go head-to-head along with the Green Wave and the Dolphins. Senior Lisa Beltran returns as coxswain of the varsity boat, while freshman Kim Swift guides the junior varsity.

Similarly, both the UCF Varsity Four and Junior Varsity Four are featured in the 10 a.m. race against Tulane, ERAU and JU. The varsity boat lineup that came up with a big win against Columbia and FIT on Canal 54 last weekend has been tweaked but the new boat, which consists of Maya Fluharty, Nicole Szwanke, Cassandra Long, Erika Frantz and cox Heather Brooks, has a wealth of experience.

Sandwiched between the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four events, the varsity and novice lightweight eights take on the Dolphins' lightweight eight, while UCF's two novice eight boats face both JU and Tulane.
