ORLANDO - Jania Shinhoster was 1-2 at the plate for the UCF softball as they were defeated by No. 20 Georgia Tech, 8-0, in the UCF Invitational championship game. The Golden Knights were 4-1 for the weekend after defeating Charleston Southern, 9-0, Northern Illinois, 8-0, Kent State, 4-2, and No. 20 Georgia Tech, 1-0, in pool play on Friday and Saturday. With the loss on Sunday, the Knights fell to 27-17-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 28-7.
Shinhoster was 1-2 against Georgia Tech with a single, while Bryttani Lindheim was 1-3 with a single. Lindsay Enders (11-10), who went the distance against No. 20 Georgia Tech yesterday and today, picked up the loss in the circle for the Black and Gold.
Georgia Tech jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second when Amy Hosier hit a double into left center. Hosier stole third and scored on a Lauren Schlechte single to left field.
The Yellow Jackets scored again in the top of the third when Caitlin Lever singled to the shortstop. Christine Sheridan moved Lever over to third on a double to left center. Lever then scored on a fielder's choice to the third baseman. Sheridan scored on a Hosier ground out to second. At the end of the top of the third, Georgia Tech was up, 3-0.
Tech extended their lead in the top of the fifth when Aileen Morales singled to left field and advanced on an error. Lever then laid down a bunt advancing to second on an error with Morales scoring from second. Lever then moved over to third on a wild pitch and was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice by Stephanie Best. Katie Donovan stole second and scored on a single to centerfield by Hosier. The top of the sixth ended with Georgia Tech up, 5-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Ramblin Wreck added three more runs when Schlechte singled to left field. Kacey Ivey moved Schlechte over to second on a fielder's choice. Schlechte was called out at third when Kirin Kumar hit into another fielder's choice for Georgia Tech. Ivey then scored and Kumar moved over to third on a single by Morales. Lever then singled to Best scoring Kumar and advancing Morales over to third. Morales scored the third Yellow Jackets' run on a sac foul ball to right field.
The Knights were unable to produce a run against Jessica Sallinger (14-5), who went the distance for Georgia Tech.
UCF returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 22 when they host Atlantic Sun conference rival Lipscomb in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Admission to all UCF softball games is free to the public.
