ORLANDO - The No. 75 Florida International women's tennis team swept host UCF, 7-0, at the UCF Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
FIU (1-1) started the day by easily won the doubles point, dropping a combined three games at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. At No. 1, Paula Zabala and Nikkita Fountain needed an extra game as the Golden Panthers tandem defeated senior Kristina Lohmos and junior Pamela Fernandez, 9-7.
Florida International continued to roll as Zabala handed Lohmos a 6-0, 6-1 loss at No. 1 singles and Marijana Cutuk earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over UCF freshman Anna Yakimchenkova at the No. 6 position. Shilla D'Armas clinched the match at No. 3 singles when she came up with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over senior Ola Luczak.
Despite the loss, Knight freshman Jennifer Carati battled in the final match of the day. She dropped the first set, 6-4, to Fountain before taking set two by an identical score. Fountain won the tiebreaker 10-7 to give FIU the sweep.
The Golden Knights (0-3) return to action when they travel to No. 40 Florida State on Feb. 11 for a noon match-up.
