ORLANDO - The UCF women's tennis team earned its first win of the season sweeping Morgan State, 7-0, at the UCF Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears (0-2) began the match down a game in each of the doubles matches, a penalty for arriving late. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights (1-4) took advantage of the opportunity as they needed only 30 minutes to win the point.
UCF carried the momentum into the singles competition, where it dropped only three games in the six matches. Freshman Jennifer Carati at No. 4 and sophomore Megan Rosario-Hunter at No. 5 won 6-0, 6-0 as did junior co-captain Pamela Fernandez at No. 2.
After battling injuries early in the season, rookie Kyla McNicol made her collegiate debut at the No. 6 position earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tai Osunsan.
Overall, it gave the team a boost of confidence. "This match gave us the opportunity to work on some of the things we needed to," said sixth-year head coach Patricia Allison. "I'm very glad we got the win."
The Golden Knights return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Tampa to take on No. 55 USF at 2 p.m., then they visit No. 10 Miami and instate Atlantic Sun rival Florida Atlantic.
"We look forward to playing USF, Miami and Florida Atlantic," said Allison. "We have a very tough week ahead of us, but we are up to the task."
