JACKSONVILLE - Junior Anthony Williams scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as Jacksonville's Jesse Kimbrough hit a free throw with three seconds left in overtime to lift the Dolphins past the UCF men's basketball team, 83-82, in Atlantic Sun play on Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Golden Knights (16-8, 9-7 A-Sun), while Jacksonville improves to 14-10 and 10-7.
After David Lee sank a foul shot with 32 seconds remaining in the extra session, the Dolphins led by two, but Williams scored on a tip-in to knot the contest at 82. Kimbrough was fouled in the act of shooting on the ensuing possession. He missed his first attempt at the line, but then hit the second shot. An attempt from halfcourt as time expired from sophomore Josh Peppers hit the rim, but fell short.
Williams was 10-of-15 from the field and made all 11 of his attempts from the charity stripe, tying a school record for free-throw percentage. Peppers finished with 14 points, six boards and six assists.
With six seconds on the clock in regulation, a basket by Brad Larson put Jacksonville up, 72-70. After a UCF timeout, junior Justin Rose took the inbounds pass from junior Will Bakanowsky and went the length of the floor, hitting a layup with one second to go to force the game into overtime.
David Lee and Kimbrough both recorded 18 points for the Dolphins, who shot 56.9 percent from the floor.
Neither team could pull away in the first half. Jacksonville snatched a five-point edge with 5:23 remaining in the opening period when Aubrey Conerly nailed a trey. Senior Kingsley Edwards then took over for UCF, hitting a three-point shot and stealing the ball from Conerly at midcourt and racing in for a dunk to help the Golden Knights to a 30-29 advantage.
The game featured 20 lead changes and 15 ties. The Dolphins led at the break, 40-39.
Jacksonville appeared to have control of the contest, leading by seven with under three minutes to play, but Peppers scored the game's next seven points. His layup with 38 seconds on the clock knotted the game at 70.
Gary Johnson scored 15 points for UCF, which shot 43.9 percent from the floor and made 18-of-20 (90 percent) tries from the line. Edwards totaled 10 points.
The squads were even on the boards, each grabbing 33 rebounds. The Dolphins bench accounted for 26 points, led by B.J. Surry (12) and Conerly (10).
Jacksonville missed 15 free throws and shot only 53.1 percent from the line. Haminn Quaintance finished with 15 points and Mario Brown came off the bench to register six blocks for the Dolphins.
UCF returns home for the first time since Jan. 31, hosting Mercer on Feb. 17. Tip off at UCF Arena is slated for 7:30 p.m.
