No. 2 Florida Sweeps UCF in Season Opener

Jan. 27, 2005

GAINESVILLE - The No. 2 Florida women's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep of UCF (0-1) in the season opener at the Ring Tennis Complex on Thursday evening.

The Gators (1-0) started off the day by earning the doubles point. After UF easily won the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, the Knights' duo of junior Pamela Fernandez and senior Kristina Lohmos gave the third-ranked tandem in the nation - Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan - a tough match before falling, 8-5.

In singles action, Florida clinched the victory when Alex Liles defeated Golden Knights' freshman Jennifer Carati, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 position.

The highlight of the day for UCF came at the No. 6 position from the play of sophomore Becky Gordon, who took the first set against the No. 74 ranked Frangulyan, 6-3. Frangulyan took the second set by an identical score to send the match into the tiebreaker, which she won 10-3.

"While the match points were frequently long and hard fought, we were unable to get the edge," said head coach Patricia Allison, who is in her sixth season at the helm of the UCF program. "We learned a lot from this match and look forward to next weekend at home."

The Golden Knights return to action when they host Auburn in their home opener on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m.
