Women's Tennis Opens Season At No. 2 Florida

Jan. 26, 2005

ORLANDO - The UCF women's tennis team makes its 2005 debut against No. 2 ranked Florida at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville on Thursday evening. The match is set to start at 5 p.m.

The Golden Knights will need the boost of confidence they gained after sweeping Flagler College, 7-0, in an exhibition contest on Jan. 22. The bottom of the lineup from the No. 3 singles position below only lost a combined total of three games in those four matches. Sophomores Becky Gordon and Megan Rosario-Hunter earned 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, while Hunter and freshman Jennifer Carati also went 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The series with the in-state rival Gators began back in 2002 when the two teams faced off in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UF came away with the 4-0 win and also earned a 5-0 victory in the 2003 season opener.

Among the competitors that will be making an appearance in Florida's lineup is the No. 3 ranked doubles tandem in the nation - freshmen Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan and the No. 11 ranked singles player junior Jennifer Magley, who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

Thursday's match-up is also the first of year for the Gators after their season opener against Baylor on Jan. 22 was cancelled due to inclement weather.
