GAINESVILLE - The third-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team began the 2005 dual match season with a 7-0 win over 68th-ranked UCF on Sunday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. The win was the 17th-straight opening day victory for UF, which began its fourth season under head coach Andy Jackson. Sunday's win marked the third straight year that UF began the season by shutting out its opponent.

Florida took the doubles point in 45 minutes. UF's Greg Ouellette and Stefan Tell led UCF's Ener Gursoy and Rhett Rosen, 5-4, before reeling off three games to post an 8-4 victory on court two. Minutes later, UF's Jordan Dolberg and Ryan Sherry gave UF the point with an 8-3 win against Sebastian Delgado and Sinan Sudas on court three. The UF duo opened the match with a 5-0 lead before surrendering a game.

Ouellette worked fast in the singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court three over Delgado to give Florida a 2-0 lead. With the win the Florida freshman improved his overall record to 19-3. In addition, he has won six of the last seven matches he has played.

Florida senior Hamid Mirzadeh put UF within one of clinching the match when UCF's Antonio Sierra withdrew in the second set with Mirzadeh leading 6-2, 3-0. The match was the first of the year for the three-time All-American.

Sherry clinched the match for the Gators at the bottom of the lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sudas. Sherry gave the Gators the match winner in one hour and 20 minutes.

Florida's Chris Brandi moved the Gators ahead 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Simon Jaegar on court five.

On court two, UF's Vladimir Obradovic took the first set from UCF's Joel Allen, 6-3, before forcing a tiebreaker in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Obradovic fell behind 0-1, and then never trailed on his way to a 7-6 (4) win.

UF newcomer Nestor Briceno gave UF the shutout one minute later with a 6-,4 6-4 win over UCF's Ener Gursoy.

UCF returns to the courts Friday, January 28 at Alabama.
