ORLANDO - The pole vaulters from the UCF women's track and field team will be competing in one of the most prestigious events in the country when they travel to the 15th Annual USA Track and Field National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. on Jan. 22.
Sophomore Katie Fowke headlines the list of Golden Knights. A 2004 NCAA Regional qualifier, she broke the school record last year with a mark of 12-feet even before taking the Atlantic Sun Conference title in the event. In the season opener at the Florida Intercollegiate on Jan. 15, she went 10-6 and took 12th.
Making their season debuts are veterans Tracy Fischler and Sara Scheeren. A sophomore, Fischler earned all-conference honors in 2004 after earning third place with a mark of 9-7.75 at the Atlantic Sun Championships. She has previously posted a career-best 9-8. Redshirting last season due to injury, Scheeren, a junior, went as high as 9-11.75 at the Disney Relays during the spring of 2002.
Freshman Michelle Teuton had an impressive collegiate debut at the Florida Intercollegiate, where her mark of 10-6 put her in 13th, while another rookie Kelsey Bealert topped off at 9-10 for 14th. They will be joined this weekend by classmate Ginny Cobb, who is competing in her first event as a Golden Knight.
UCF assistant coach Cristy Turner is also participating in the open division. After two years on hiatus, Turner placed fifth with a vault of 12-1.50 as an unattached athlete at Florida.
The summit boasted 1,000 athletes in 62 different competitions during 2004. Among the athletes participating last year was 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Stacy Dragila.
