ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF softball team started the 2005 season with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Lady Vols broke on the scoreboard in the third inning. A RBI single by third basemen Kristi Durant scored shortstop Linsay Schutzler.

UT tacked on another run in the fourth inning capitalizing on a lead-off walk by first baseman Tonya Callahan. Leftfielder Katherine Card plated the run on a sacrifice fly, and gave the Lady Vols a 2-0 advantage.

UT picked up two more runs in the seventh inning stringing together three hits, and pushing the lead to 4-0 on a two run single by Durant.

"They (Tennessee) did a good job in clutch situations," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. "They really took advantage with two outs scoring five of their six runs."

The Lady Vols used two UCF errors to score two more runs in the ninth inning for the final margin of 6-0.

There were some bright spots in the loss. Relief pitcher Jennifer Tomasetti threw a flawless two innings retiring all six batters she faced.

"I was really excited with what Jen did out there today," Luers-Gillispie said. "She had excellent movement on her pitches, and kept the batters off-balanced."

Luers-Gillispie was also impressed with starter Lindsay Enders who threw three innings.

"Lindsay had a great outing," Luers-Gillispie said. "She started strong, and was able to strike out a couple of batters."

UCF will face Tennessee in the regular season on February 4th at the Clearwater Invitational.

"Today was just a measuring stick," Luers-Gillispie said. "We know we have to face them again in four weeks, and we'll be ready to go."
