Women's Basketball to Open Conference Play Against Belmont Thursday Night

ORLANDO, Fla. - The UCF women's basketball team will take on Belmont to open Atlantic Sun Conference play for the 2004-05 season Thursday night at 5 p.m. The Golden Knights will enter the game 1-3 for the season while the Bruins come in 3-1. The Black and Gold defeated preseason ranked #22 UNLV to open the season before tough losses to Northern Arizona, Southern Miss and Florida. Belmont has played Virginia Commonwealth, South Alabama, Indiana and Chicago State with their only loss coming against Indiana.

Senior Takira Allen leads the Golden Knights with 10 points per game while senior Ali Roberts leads the Black and Gold in blocked shots with 11. Junior Shelby Weber leads the team in rebounds with 4.8 per game.

Hollie Davis leads the Belmont Bruins with 13.0 points per game with Brooke Sunday leading the team in rebounds with 7.8 per game. The Bruins' head coach, Tony Cross is in his 20th season at the helm of the program with a 433-185 record.

UCF is 4-2 all-time against Belmont and has outscored the Bruins 404-398. The Knights and Bruins met twice last season splitting the series. On January 31, 2004, UCF defeated Belmont 67-55 at UCF Arena. Celeste Hudson led the Knights with 27 points while Roberts led the team with 11 rebounds. Belmont's Brandi Miller led the Bruins with 25 points and nine rebounds.

Belmont defeated UCF on February 9, 2004 in Nashville, Tenn. by a score of 65-58. Hudson and Adrienne Billings led the Knights with 13 points followed closely by Allen and Roberts who had 11. Hudson also led the Black and Gold in rebounds with eight. For the Bruins, Miller and Destri Bockey led the team with 14 points apiece. Miller also grabbed 12 rebounds to complete a double double for her.

For the two games, Hudson led the team with 20 points per game average while Roberts had 7.5 rebounds per game.

The UCF men's basketball team will take on Gardner-Webb to open their Atlantic Sun Conference schedule Thursday night at the conclusion of the women's game. Tickets for both games are still available.
