GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Francine Houston led the Golden Knights with 14 points Tuesday night at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center when the University of Florida Gators defeated UCF 67-42. The Knights fell to 1-3 on the season while the Lady Gators improved to 2-2.
Houston came in off the bench to go 5-for-7 from the field, 3-for-5 from behind the arch and 1-for-2 from the charity line. Along with the 14 points, Houston grabbed four rebounds and had two assists and two steals. Lashaunda Slade led the team in rebounds with six. Ali Roberts led the Knights in blocks with three while stealing one and assisting on two shots.
Both teams came out battling back and forth in the first half before the Gators took the lead and never looked back.
At halftime, the Lady Gators were up 28-19. The Golden Knights' starting five, Takira Allen, Roberts, Celeste Hudson, Shayla Smith and Shelby Weber, were 6-for-17 from the field, 0-for-3 from the three-point line and 0-for-0 on free throws. Houston had scored seven of her 14 points in the first half by shooting 3-for-4 from the field and 1-for-2 from the arch.
Bernice Mosby who had 16 points with one assist and one steal led Florida. Tamia Williams led the Lady Gators in rebounds with five.
"They have a very good basketball team," said head coach Gail Striegler, "and for us to compete with them we have to play 40 minutes, we can't give up any easy second baskets or any transition baskets, which we gave up a couple of those the first half and then went into a dry spell in the second half. I'll give them credit, they played some good defense."
The Golden Knights return to action Thursday, December 2 when they take on the Belmont Bruins in the UCF Arena at 5 p.m. The UCF men's basketball team will take on Gardner-Webb at the conclusion of the women's game. Tickets are still available for both games.
