TALLAHASSEE - The UCF women's tennis team earned five victories in the singles competition and six in doubles in the opening day action of the Lady Seminole Classic at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday.
Junior Pamela Fernandez advanced to the semifinals of the Flight Two Singles competition with a 7-5, 6-2 first round win over Virginia's D. Bechliwanis. In Flight Five, both freshmen Kyla McNichol and Anna Yakimchenkova moved onto Saturday's competition, where they will face each other. McNichol didn't drop a game to Virginia's J. Firth-Morais, while Yakimchenkova defeated A. Jaja of FAMU, 6-0, 6-3. Sophomore Megan Rosario-Hunter also advanced to the semi-finals of the Flight Five with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stetson J. Winoski.
In Flight Six round robin competition, freshman Becky Gordon earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ashley Eville of Stetson. Seniors Ola Luczak and Kristina Lohomos and freshman Jennifer Carati dropped into the left side of the bracket after losing their first round matches.
In double competition, the duo of Lohomos and McNichol lost their Flight One opener, 8-5, to Anderson and Van Londen of Georgia Tech but rebounded to beat Virginia's team of Pareira and Fitth/Morais, 8-4.
The pair of Fernandez and Carati had a similar fate in Flight Two losing to Bechilwanis/Bechilwanis of Virginia by a score of 8-2 before defeated Leonenko/Levin of Stetson, 9-7.
Meanwhile, in Flight Three, the duos of Gordon/Luczak and Hunter/Yakimchenkova went undefeated in two matches.
Competition at the Lady Seminole Classic resumes on Saturday with the semi-finals in singles and the finals in doubles.
