TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The UCF Golden Knights defeated the #12 Florida State Seminoles 3-2 in their final game of the season. Down 2-0 at halftime, the Knights fought back to score three unanswered goals in the second half to take home the win. With the victory, UCF improved to 15-3-1 on the season while Florida State fell to 12-5-1.
After both teams taking just one shot apiece in the first 25 minutes, Florida State's Jez Ratliff broke through and scored the first goal of the game in the 26th minute of play, her seventh for the season. The ball was redirected off a corner kick before being punched in for the score. Libby Gianeskis and Julie Schnugg assisted on the goal.
Ten minutes later, Schnugg scored her seventh goal of the season to put UCF down 2-0. The goal came off a throw that Schnugg then netted unassisted.
At the halftime break, Florida State was up 2-0, had out-shot UCF 6-1 and had taken three corner kicks compared to zero for UCF.
After halftime, the Golden Knights came out ready to go. Sophomore Jessalyn Withers scored her first goal of the season at the 55:50 mark to bring UCF within one goal of Florida State. Freshman Kendra Flock earned her third assist of the season on Withers' goal.
Less than five minutes later, senior Allison Blagriff tied the score up with an unassisted goal giving her nine goals on the season.
With less than one minute remaining, Flock scored her team high tenth goal of the season to give UCF the lead. She took a shot that deflected off a defender before going past a diving Joy McKenzie. The goal was also her third game-winning goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Julie Snaman had six saves in the victory to improve her record to 13-2-1 on the season. After allowing the two goals in the first half of action, Snaman put up a wall that Florida State was unable to break through in the second half.
In the end, Florida State had out-shot UCF 14-10 and had taken four corner kicks to UCF's three. This was the first time in Florida State's history that they have been up 2 goals to none and then lose.
UCF returns to action Friday, November 5 at 4 pm when they take on the winner of the Florida Atlantic-Jacksonville game in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C. The Golden Knights are seeded second in the tournament behind the host Campbell Camels.
