ORLANDO, Fla. - Claudia Johnson came off the bench to score a team high 16 points while playing 15 minutes when the Golden Knights lost to Southern Miss 59-54. UCF fell to 1-2 on the season while Southern Miss improved to 2-1. The Knights are now 0-5 against their future Conference USA opponent the Lady Eagles.
Johnson went 6-for-8 on field goals and 4-for-6 on three-point field goals. These were Johnson's first points since the 2002-03 season. Ali Roberts led the team in rebounds with nine and blocks with five while scoring nine points in 24 minutes of action.
The starting five, Roberts, Takira Allen, Shelby Weber, Celeste Hudson and Shayla Smith accounted for 25 of the 54 points and 20 of the 36 rebounds. Off the bench, Johnson, Lashaunda Slade, Francine Houston, Keunta Miles and Jeralynn Campbell accounted for 29 of the 54 points and 10 of the 36 rebounds.
The Knights went into half time up 31-25 with Johnson leading the team in points with 11 while playing seven minutes. Johnson sparked the Knights' offense by going 4-for-5 on field goals and 3-for-4 on three-point field goals.
Shannon Stueber who had 24 points with six rebounds while playing the whole game led the Lady Eagles. Stueber was 7-for-14 from the field, 4-for-6 from behind the arc and 6-for-8 from the charity line.
The Golden Knights return to action Tuesday, November 30 when they take on the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. at 5 p.m. The next home game for the Knights is Thursday, December 2 when UCF takes on Belmont at 5 p.m. in the first game of the Atlantic Sun schedule.
