Gary Johnson Named A-Sun Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. - UCF senior guard Gary Johnson was named the Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week on Monday after earning MVP honors at the BP Top of the World Classic, which the Golden Knights won on Sunday. Johnson averaged 11.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game as UCF topped host Alaska-Fairbanks, Utah State, and New Mexico State to take home the tournament title.

Johnson, a 6-2 senior point guard from Wayne, Mich., earned his first career A-Sun Player-of-the-Week honor in leading UCF to a 3-0 start on the 2004-05 season. Johnson opened the week with eight points, four boards and three assists in a win over Alaska-Fairbanks. He followed that effort with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the win over Utah State. Johnson finished the week with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists, including a trio of three pointers, in the championship win over New Mexico State. Johnson shot 39.3 percent on the week and was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line. He also played two turnover free games and finished the week with nine assists and just four turnovers. Johnson also added five steals and a block in three games.

UCF (3-0) will look to extend its unbeaten streak to four games as the Golden Knights return home on Wednesday to host Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 7:00 p.m.
