MIAMI - Freshman Scott Baron scored his first collegiate goal and junior goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh stopped five shots as UCF shutout Florida International, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA College Cup on Friday night.

It was the first time that UCF (11-6-2) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament since the program went to Division I in 1984. This was also the first time in six meetings that the Golden Knights defeated their in-state rival.

FIU (11-7-0) pressured UCF early with two good scoring chances in the opening six minutes of the match. The Knights got their first scoring chance 13:22 in when junior Jon Imran dribble in and passed the ball across the box. FIU's Shawn Crowe (one save) corralled the ball before junior Billy Judino or senior John Sobczak could get to it.

Baron got his first collegiate goal in the 26th minute when he sprinted in uncontested and scored to the left on an unsuspecting Crowe. It was the Golden Knights only shot of the period as they were outshot 6-1.

In the second half, FIU put more pressure on the UCF's defense. McIntosh was forced to make a diving save on a shot by Mario Franca at 52:24, then made two more quick saves on a floater and a header off a free kick. In the 57th minute, Baron made a defensive save in the left corner and McIntosh made another sprawling save to keep the shutout alive.

FIU finished the night with a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Knights face top-seeded Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
