GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Kate McCain scored the lone goal for the Golden Knights in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament when Boston College defeated them 2-1. This season was the first season since 1999 that Golden Knights made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Boston College Eagles tested UCF's goalkeeper Julie Snaman early in the match. In the first six minutes of play, BC had taken three shots with JoAnna Black blocking the first shot and Snaman saving the other two.
The UCF defense held strong against a very aggressive BC offense. Black and freshmen Jessica Hallgren and Kelsey Kravec worked to hold the BC offense to just five shots in the first half.
The teams were very evenly matched during the first half with BC taking five shots to UCF's four with both goalkeepers making three saves apiece. In the corner kick department, UCF took five compared to BC's one.
At the beginning of the second half, Boston College came out aggressive again with Laina Ceddia scoring the first goal of the game in the 49th minute. The goal was her seventh on the season and was assisted.
Ten minutes later, BC scored their second goal of the afternoon. Kia McNeill punched in her 10th goal of the season unassisted on a breakaway.
UCF took a moment to regroup before putting the ball back in play. Less than two minutes after BC's second goal, UCF's McCain scored the Golden Knights first goal of the afternoon and her fifth of the season bringing the score of the game to 2-1.
The Eagles threatened again with eight minutes left when McNeill went one on one with Black but Black was able to get a foot on the ball and kick it out of bounds to stop the threat.
"This is the furthest that the seniors have been in their career. With the Florida State and Florida wins, we knew that we could compete with the `big dogs' and we were excited to continue going down the line, but the tanks weren't quite full today. This is the first game that we scored in where we lost all season," said Head Coach Amanda Cromwell.
The Golden Knights finished the season 17-4-2 while Boston College improves to 15-6-1 and advances to the Round of 16 where they will take on either Princeton or Villanova.
