May 27, 2004

GAINESVILLE - The seventh-seeded and eighth-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team defeated No. 71 UCF, 4-0, in a first round match up in Gainesville, Fla. UCF ended its season with a 15-9 record after making its second trip to the NCAA Regional. A season ago, UCF also played Florida in the opening round and was defeated 4-0.

"UCF was a quality opponent that really pushed us," said UF head coach Andy Jackson. Florida got to within one match of clinching the doubles point when 41st-ranked Chris Brandi and Hamid Mirzadeh led 2-1 over Catalin Bradu and Antonio Sierra at the top of the lineup before reeling off six unanswered games for the 8-1 victory.

UF got the win it needed to take the doubles point when Jordan Dolberg and Stefan Tell paired for the first time this season on court three to get an 8-4 victory over Gabriel Strangberg and Rhett Rosen. The Florida duo teamed together after Martin Stiegwardt who was Tell's partner for the majority of the dual match season did not play due to a left knee injury.

A 6-0, 6-0 win on court six by Florida's Ryan Sherry over Paul Ramy made it a 2-0 Gator advantage. Sherry blanked Ramy in just under an hour to pull his dual match record to 12-6 on the year as half of his dozen victories have come in the last seven outings.

Brandi made it a 3-0 Gator lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court four over Joel Allen. Brandi improved to 14-9 in dual matches on the year and picked up his fourth win in his last five appearances.

Mirzadeh provided the clincher at the top of the lineup where he defeated Bradu, 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes.
