ORLANDO - A goal by Del Olaoye in the 107th minute gave Mercer a 2-1 double overtime victory over host UCF in Atlantic Sun men's soccer action on Friday night at the UCF Soccer Complex.
The Golden Knights (6-5-2, 5-2 A-Sun) battled the Bears (9-6, 6-1 A-Sun) in the first half as the two teams combined for 19 fouls. Mercer would come out on top at the intermission thanks to a goal by Alan Colgan with 15 seconds remaining on the clock. He was assisted by Vicinte Arze.
The Knights outplayed Mercer in the second half registering an 8-1 advantage in shots and a 10-1 margin in corner kicks. During the 74th minute, UCF had four chances on corners but couldn't convert. Senior John Sobczak finally got UCF on the board with 30 seconds remaining in regulation play when he redirected a free kick by junior Billy Judino.
UCF had three opportunities to end the game in the first overtime. Sophomore tri-captain Alejandro Gessen's shot was blocked by the Mercer defense in front of the goal, while senior Xavier Delgado and redshirt freshman Adham Rashwan each had chances at the top left off the box that were stopped by Bear goalkeeper Martin Walker (four saves).
Junior goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh made his first and only save of the game on Olaoye in the 105th minute, but couldn't stop a second shot 30 seconds later.
The Golden Knights finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 13-4 favor in corner kicks. The two teams were whistled for a combined 39 fouls and each received four cautions.
UCF will try to rebound from the loss when it hosts Georgia State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex.
