Belmont Snaps UCF Winning Streak With 1-0 Win

Oct. 23, 2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A goal by Tyler Suffron in the 87th minute gave the Belmont men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UCF at the Whitten Soccer Complex and snapped a five-game winning streak by the conference-leading Golden Knights.

With the win, the Bruins improved their record to 6-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the A-Sun play. UCF dropped to 6-4-2, 5-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the match, but couldn't finish. With time in regulation winding down, Suffron scored off a pass in the box from Channing Twyner and put it past UCF goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh for the 1-0 advantage.

The Knights began to push harder in their offensive end. With 20 seconds left, UCF freshman Oscar Ortiz sent a corner kick into the box, but BU freshman Robert Fernandez clinched the victory for the Bruins with his clear out kick save.

UCF held a slight 10-9 favor in shots, while BU owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Belmont goalkeeper Kyle Roelke, who was playing in his first A-Sun match due to an injury to long-time starter Matt Renfrow, recorded three saves. UCF goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh had four saves.

The Golden Knights finish their season with a three-game homestand that begins with Mercer on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex.
