Buffalo Runs Past UCF, 48-20

BUFFALO, N.Y. -Alex Haynes rushed for 131 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns but it was not enough as Buffalo defeated visiting UCF 48-20 Saturday night at UB Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y. With the win, the Bulls raised their record to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the MAC while UCF fell to 0-4, 0-1 in the conference.

The Bulls had a huge night offensively, gaining 440 yards in total offense. The Golden Knights also had a strong night offensively, totaling a season-high 473 yards, but three turnovers spelled defeat for UCF.

Both teams started their first offensive drive with a touchdown. Buffalo scored first as Steven King rumbled in from 30 yards out to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead.

UCF answered quickly as Steven Moffett started UCF's drive with a 61-yard completion to Tavaris Capers, the longest completion of Moffett's career. Just two plays later, Alex Haynes scored his 24th career rushing touchdown from 12 yards to tie the game at 7-7.

The scoring continued on Buffalo's next drive as the Bulls drove 75 yards in 10 plays capped off by a 22-yard field goal by Mike Baker to give UB a 10-7 advantage.

UCF drove the field on its second drive to the Buffalo 16-yard line, but the drive stalled as Matt Prater missed a 33-yard field goal. The miss snapped a streak of 11 consecutive made field goals by prater, one short of tying the school record.

UCF used the 1-2 punch of Moffett and Haynes on the next drive as UCF marched 67 yards on 11 plays, ending with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Moffett to Capers. The touchdown reception for Capers was the 15th of his career, moving him into a tie for 10th place in the UCF annals in career touchdown receptions.

Buffalo regained the lead with 7:35 remaining in the second quarter when Jared Patterson scored on a two-yard run to make the score 17-13. The Bulls drove 69 yards in just five plays on the scoring drive.

Buffalo made the score 20-13 on 1Baker's second field goal of the night from 42 yards with 2:10 remaining in the first half.

Moffett's first interception of the night set up the Bulls' final scoring drive of the first half. Rich Sanders picked off Moffett to set up UB at the UCF 49-yard line. From there, the Bulls took advantage of two personal fouls against the UCF defense before Dave Dawson scored on a seven-yard run. With the touchdown, UB extended the lead to 27-13 with just 48 seconds remaining in the first half.

Buffalo ran for 202 yards in the first half on the ground, while UCF moved the ball well with 260 yards of total offense.

Buffalo continued its momentum in the second half on its first drive as Chris Moore found Terrance Breaux on an 86-yard touchdown to extend the UB advantage to 34-13. The touchdown came on a 3rd down and eight play as Breaux broke a Rovel Hamilton tackle for the score.

UCF finally ended UB's 24-0 scoring run with a four-yard score from Haynes to cut the lead to 34-20. The two touchdown performance for Haynes also marked the 13th 100-yard game in his career.

The Bulls offensive explosion continued on the following possession as Dawson scored his second touchdown of the night from one yard out to give the Bulls a 41-20 advantage.

Moffett's third interception of the night went right through the hands of Capers as the Bulls gained possession at the UCF 39. UB then proceeded to score its fifth rushing touchdown of the night as King scored from the one to give the Bulls a 48-20 advantage.
