Fox Named National Player Of The Week

TUCSON, Ariz. – UCF junior pitcher Matt Fox (Coral Springs, Fla./Douglas HS) was named one of five “Louisville Slugger’s” National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Monday. Fox struck out a career-high 14 batters in a career-best 7.0 innings in UCF’s 13-0 win over Monmouth Friday evening at Jay Bergman Field.

Fox pitched 5.2 innings of perfect baseball before allowing two hits in the sixth inning. He finished the game allowing just two hits and no runs. He retired 17 of the first 18 batters he faced to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Fox leads UCF with a 3-0 record and 1.21 ERA. In 22.1 innings pitched, Fox has totaled 36 strikeouts and just seven walks. Opponents are batting just .125 vs. the right-hander.


"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Derek Hankins, Memphis: Hankins, in only his second career NCAA Division I start, tied the Memphis school record for strikeouts as he fanned 17 Murray State batters in a 7-1 win. Even more impressive was that Hankins tied the record in just seven innings. He struck out the side in the first, fifth and sixth innings and fanned seven in a row at one stage as he allowed only two hits.

P Peter Young, Lewis & Clark: Young hurled only the second no-hitter in the last 25 years of baseball at Lewis & Clark College in a win over Bethany College. He fanned six batters over the 7-inning game and walked one. In three starts this season, he is 2-0 with a 1.49 ERA.

RHP Derek Duclos, Richmond: Duclos combined with Matt McLoughlin for a no-hitter against Coastal Carolina. Over the first six innings of the nine-inning contest, Duclos did not allow a hit and struck out six. McLoughlin was also impressive as he pitched the final three innings and struck out five batters.

RHP Matt Fox, UCF: Fox struck out 14 batters in seven innings in a 13-0 win over Monmouth. Fox yielded two hits and no runs while pitching 5 2/3 innings of perfect baseball. He retired 17 of the first 18 batters he faced to improve to 3-0 on the season.

OF Travis Buck, Arizona State: Buck went 10-for-12 at the plate in a 3-game series against Connecticut. He scored six runs, hit five doubles, one home run and knocked in 13 runs. He went 4-for-5 in an 18-2 win over the Huskies, tying a school record with four doubles. He then went 5-for-5 in his next game with three singles, a home run and a double with a career-high 8 RBI.
