ORLANDO – Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Fox struck out eight batters in 5.1 innings of work to lead UCF to an impressive 11-1 victory over Utah Friday evening at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando. Fox (2-0) limited the Utes to one unearned run on two hits for his second victory of the season.
The Golden Knights (5-2) won their third straight game as they set season-highs in runs (11), hits (13) and strikeouts (14).
The Golden Knights scored four runs in the second and two in the third to take a 6-1 lead after three innings of play.
UCF added three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to close out the scoring at 11-1.
Three players recorded multi-hit games, led by Ryan Bono’s three hits. Bono was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Clay Timpner and Brown also had two hits while Jon Cooper and Kevin Richmond each drove in a pair of runs.
Three UCF players limited the Utes to just four hits. Freshman Brian Brooks relieved Fox and tossed a career-high 2.2 innings with a personal-best four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Taylor Meier made his first career appearance in the ninth and fanned two in a perfect inning of work.
The Golden Knights and Utes continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. UCF will send sophomore right-hander Kyle Bono to the mound while Utah will counter with sophomore left-hander Jason Price.
