NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior right-handed pitcher Von David Stertzbach was selected in the ninth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft by the World Champion Anaheim Angels Tuesday. Stertzbach is the first UCF player to be taken in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft.
Stertzbach is the sixth player from UCF to be drafted by the Angels and the first since the Angels selected Dan Stillman in the 47th round in 2000. Current UCF team manager Tim Boeth was a 33rd round selection by the Angels following the 1999 season.
One of the all-time greats at UCF, Stertzbach finished his career ranked among the school’s all-time leaders in strikeouts (231/6th) and appearances (80/2nd). In 2003, Stertzbach split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen, ending his season with a 4-5 record including a 4.43 ERA. In four years at UCF, Stertzbach was 12-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 214.2 innings pitched.
