Baseball Sweeps Monmouth For Fifth Straight Win

ORLANDO – The UCF baseball team won a wild 17-10 slugfest over Monmouth Sunday afternoon at Jay Bergman Field. The game lasted two hours and 54 minutes and also had a 40-minute rain delay.

UCF set season-highs in hits (20) and runs (17) in the victory. The last time UCF totaled 20 hits in a game was May 11, 2002 at Georgia State when the Golden Knights pounded out 23.

The win was the fifth-straight for the Golden Knights as they improved to 9-4 on the year. Monmouth dropped to 0-4 to start the season.

With the four-game series sweep of the Hawks, it marked the first time since 1997 that UCF has swept a four-game series from an opponent. The last time UCF won all four games of a series was in 1997 at home over Siena.

Taylor Cobb improved to 2-0 this season after allowing two earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. Cobb struck out four and walked three. Monmouth starter Brian Driber dropped to 0-1 after tossing 3.0 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts.

UCF scored early and often to put away the Hawks. UCF scored a run in each of the first six innings including a six-run outburst in the fourth. UCF led 17-3 after six innings of play before Monmouth scored one run in the seventh and six in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Several Golden Knights finished the game with new personal bests. Brian Steenson finished 1-for-3 with new career-highs in runs (3) and RBI (3) in his first start at UCF. Blaine Schulte also totaled a new personal-best with four RBI and tied a career-high with three hits on the day.

Jon Cooper established a new personal best with four hits and three RBI (4-for-6). Reserve infielder Burt Clark also smashed his first career home run over the fence in left field. The homer was also Clark’s first career hit at UCF.

UCF returns to action Wednesday, March 5 at home vs. Bethune-Cookman. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
