BUIES CREEK, NC - UCF road the bats of Rich Wallace and Adam Miller, who each contributed with home runs, in its 20-1 win over Campbell University at Taylor Field Friday night. Wallace went deep in the first inning with two men on, while Miller saved his shot for the seventh, giving the Knights their first grand slam of the season.
UCF wasted no time getting on the board as they posted five runs in the first, high-lighted by Wallace’s three run jack. UCF extended its lead to 8-0 in the second, scoring three runs on four hits and forcing the Camels to go to their pen. The Knights started the inning with three consecutive hits from Jason Graham, David Mann and Mike Myers, who claimed a RBI with his single. Clay Timpner added the fourth hit of the inning driving in Mann.
Campbell was able to slow the Knights down for two innings and cut into the lead, posting its only run of the game in the fourth on a Mitch Williams single. UCF responded in the fifth with another break out inning, putting four runs on the board on four hits.
At the start of the seventh the Knights were up 13-1 but continued to add to their lead with a five run out- burst that was topped off by Miller’s grand slam. Wayne Summers scored the first run of the inning on a bases loaded walk. UCF added a single runs in the eighth and ninth to make the final score 20-1.
Myers continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-6, knocking in four runs and scoring three times. Also claiming three hits on the night were Dee Brown and Jeremy Frost. Wallace had three RBI’s and Miller topped the team with five RBI’s, adding a sac fly in the sixth to his home run.
UCF starter Mark Michael improved his record to 4-2 on the season scattering six hits over six innings, while allowing one run and fanning four Campbell batters. The Golden Knights used three arms out of the pen, which gave up a combined one hit and struck out four. Nick Whidden pitched a perfect seventh and passed the ball to freshman Taylor Cobb in the eighth. This was Cobb’s first appearance as a Golden Knight and he did not fail to impress, striking out two and surrendering one hit. Matt Fox made his second consecutive appearance and pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.
UCF will conclude its three game series with Campbell on Saturday, when it plays a double header at Taylor Filed starting at 1:00 p.m.
