ORLANDO -- UCF made five errors and left 10 men on base in its game with Rhode Island, which proved to be costly in a 7-6 loss to the Rams.
Rhode Island came out swinging, posting runs in each of the first three innings and jumping out to a 4 -2 lead. UCF comitted four of its six errors in the first two innings, helping Rhode Island to three runs. A throwing error by the third baseman in the first would put the lead-off man on, who would eventually come around to score the games first run on a Matthew Jackson single to right. The Rams lead-off man would reach in the second on a fielding error by the second baseman and advance on a bad throw. UCF’s third error of the inning came on a bad throw from third that pulled the first baseman off the bag, but it would not factor in the score as the next two batters struck out and flied to center.
UCF scored two runs in the bottom of the second when Bo Hall tripled down the right-field line scoring Ryan Bear and Nathan Kragt who had reached via a double to right center and a walk, respectively.
The Knights would score again in the fifth to take a one run lead. UCF scored three runs, with RBI’s coming from a Mike Myers double to right center, a Jason Graham sacrifice fly to right field, that plated Myers, and a Jeremy Frost double that was scorched to left field.
The Rams came charging back in the next half inning scoring three runs of their own and taking a 7-5 lead. The seven Rhode Island runs would be enough for the victory, but not with out a last chance effort from the Knights. UCF scored one last time in the ninth with two hits, leaving one man stranded at first, when the final batter of the night struck out. With two out, Frost stroked a double to left field and would come around to score three pitches later on Bear’s single to right.
Frost had the bat going with three hits in five at bats, while scoring once and knocking in another. Bear had a productive evening going 2-3 with two walks, one run scored and an RBI. Hall also contributed to the cause with two hits, two RBI’s, one run scored and one walk.
Justin Cerrato did not factor in the decision in his first start of the year. Cerrato threw 5.1 innings, serving up five runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
UCF will play again Thursday, March 14, when they take on Long Island University at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
