GREENVILLE, N.C. -- UCF and ECU were able to finish up Saturday’s delayed game and get in Sunday’s regularly scheduled game amidst off-and-on rain showers on Sunday. UCF could not slow down the ECU offense enough to win and dropped Saturday’s continuation 7-4 and Sunday’s game 7-3.
Play started with UCF up to bat in the top of the sixth with one on and one out. Any chance of an early attack was ended when the Knights first batter grounded into a double play to end the inning. ECU added one in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 7-1. The Knights had a short lived come back in the top of the eighth when the first two batters reached on singles to center field. Freshman Matt Fox followed up with an opposite field shot that landed over the right field wall for his first career homerun as a Golden Knight, bringing UCF back to with in three at 7-4. UCF would only reach base once in the rest of the game via a walk as ECU pitching induced the UCF hitters into four ground outs and two fly outs putting an end to the game and any chance of a UCF victory.
Game two of the day and three of the series saw the Knights post eight hits, however they were only able to score three times in the game. ECU opened the scoring in the first inning for the third straight game when super freshman Darryl Lawhorn, who had four homeruns in the series came around to score from second on a single to right field. ECU would get two more in the third and Four in the sixth for its total of seven.
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the fourth when Ty Hanson who had doubled down the left field line, scored on a Clay Timpner single to center field. The Knights would squander an opportunity though leaving two men on in the fourth. UCF’s final two runs came in the seventh. Timpner led off the inning with a solo blast to right field for his third of the year. Blaine Schulte followed with a triple and would later score on a Bo Hall single to Center. Both teams went scoreless the rest of the way and the game ended 7-3 in favor if the Pirates. Schulte received the start in left field and took advantage going 3-3 with two singles, a triple and a walk in the game.
The Golden Knights recorded only six fewer hits than the Pirates, but were not able to make them count as they were out scored 18-7 in the three game series. Fox and Timpner each had homeruns for the Knights and Schulte recorded the Knights only triple in the three game set.
UCF will be looking to stay undefeated at home when they return to action on Thursday, March 7 and take on Vanderbilt at Jay Bergman Field. Game time is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
