DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman starting pitcher Helpiz Moises threw a three-hit shutout to stun UCF at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon.
Moises’ (1-0) walked the first two UCF batters of the game, then retired 19 of the next 21. The right-hander gave up three singles, struck out nine, including seven looking, and fired 131 pitches in his performance.
The Golden Knights had not been shutout in 74 prior contests dating back to May 17, 2000 against Campbell in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The third consecutive loss marked the first time it has occurred since April of 1999, when UCF lost to Jacksonville and then No. 8 Florida Atlantic twice.
Bethune-Cookman (6-1) won its fifth straight game, all against Atlantic Sun opponents. The Wildcats scored runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
UCF starting pitcher Burt Clark (0-1) threw four no-hit innings, but walked five, including four consecutive batters with two-outs in the third, allowing the Wildcats to break the scoreless tie. Jose Vasquez’s walk scored Rusty Moore.
Bethune-Cookman scored in the sixth inning off reliever Brad Busbin. Busbin allowed Vasquez and Alberto Meran to lead off the inning. Sylvannah Dean dropped a sacrifice bunt, but Busbin’s throw sailed over second baseman Adam Miller’s head, allowing Vasquez to come around to score from second. Busbin retired the next three batters without any more runs crossing the plate.
Jose Ramos greeted Busbin with a two-out solo home run to left field in the seventh inning to make the score 3-0. Nick Whidden closed out the game for UCF with 1.1 scoreless innings.
Jeremy Frost, Clay Timpner and David Mann all had singles for UCF.
The Golden Knights will travel to Lafayette, La., to play the Ragin Cajuns in a three-game series beginning Friday night at Tigue Moore Field. Friday night’s first pitch is 7:30 p.m. Lincoln Mincks (0-0, 6.35 ERA) is the probable starting pitcher for the Golden Knights.
