No. 17 Women's Tennis Sweeps Houston to Secure Perfect Home Record

by Alex Clough

ORLANDO - The No. 17 UCF women’s tennis team put the finishing touches on a dominating season at the USTA National Campus, sweeping Houston in the home finale to secure an undefeated 13-0 record in front of Knight Nation.

Powered by the Knights’ brilliant play in doubles, dropping five games across three courts, UCF’s singles prowess was on full display once again as the Cougars were provided no path back into the game.

Boasting a 14-5 doubles record entering Saturday’s contest, the Knights replicated the exact scoreline they tallied against West Virginia last week. One court three, Olivia Bergler and Donatella Guarnieri tallied their third-consecutive win, besting Houston’s Heta Nuutinen and Valeriia Krokhotina, 6-1. The tandem has dropped just five games during their strong run of form.

Both courts one and two sat in the Knights’ favor, 5-2, as each duo strived to secure the clincher. With each approaching match point, it was Sophia Biolay and Jade Psonka who were first to the punch, defeating Sophie Schouten and Gabriela Cortes, 6-2. The newly minted 19th-ranked tandem of Olivia Lincer and Hannah Rylatt offered a strong performance despite the contest going unfinished.

In singles, UCF was empathic on the front four courts, with a pair of 6-3 and 6-4 results giving the Knights even more of a cushion.

On court three, Bergler swept Houston’s Heta Nuutinen in the second to secure a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-0, and her fifth-straight. The Polish native hasn’t lost a match in nearly a month, along with authoring a 6-0 record when placed third in the Knights’ lineup.

Seconds later the star of the senior day ceremony before the match, Sophia Biolay, fittingly planted her name in the record book in what could potentially be her final collegiate match in Orlando. Opposite Iva Sepa, Biolay reeled off her 14th-consecutive win, 6-3, 6-1, to move into sole possession of second place in program history.

The clincher came from a familiar face in Jade Psonka, who moved alongside Bergler with her fifth match-winner, defeating Valeriia Krokhotina, 6-4, 6-1.

98th-ranked Lincer sat one game away from taking her court-one contest, while Rylatt and Guarnieri were looking to push their duels into a third when the matches went unfinished.
