Men's Hoops to Participate in Greenbrier Tip-Off Next Season

by Ken Landis

ORLANDO – The UCF men’s basketball team will participate in the inaugural Greenbrier Tip-Off in White Sulpher Springs, W.Va. during its 2024-25 season, as announced Tuesday by the event’s hosts, Intersport and The Greenbrier.

UCF will be joined by Pitt and Wisconsin at the Greenbrier Tip-Off, as well as a team to be named at a later date following the conclusion of the college basketball season. The semifinal round will be played on Nov. 22, followed by the championship and consolation games on Nov. 24.

In 2023, Intersport and The Greenbrier entered into a long-term partnership to bring major college basketball to the mountain resort destination. Radford and Marshall met in a standalone contest on Nov. 10 in Colonial Hall at the famed resort.

"The Radford-Marshall game hosted at The Greenbrier earlier this season was a fantastic success for all involved," said Jill Justice, D.O., President of The Greenbrier. "We can't wait to take that to a new level with The Greenbrier Tip-Off. We are excited about welcoming new teams and new fan bases to learn about what has made The Greenbrier 'America's Resort' for nearly 250 years. It will be an unforgettable experience."

The Knights have faced Pittsburgh and Wisconsin just one time each, both happening before the turn of the century.

Wisconsin has climbed as high as No. 6 in the national polls this season and are in search of a top-four finish In the Big Ten this season. Head coach Greg Gard has led the Badgers to two Big Ten regular season titles since 2020.

Pitt is wrapping up its sixth season under the direction of head coach Jeff Capel, and eyes postseason play for the second straight season, marking the first time in nearly a decade the team played in the postseason in consecutive years.

The Knights have won back-to-back in-season tournaments, earning a pair of victories at both the Jacksonville Classic this season as well as the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship during the 2022-23 campaign. The Black and Gold have won three in-season tournament titles under head coach Johnny Dawkins, with the other being the Myrtle Beach Invitational during the 2018-19 season.

Most recently, UCF used victories over South Dakota State and an overtime win against Charlotte to leave St. Augustine, Fla. with a tournament title, earning victories on back-to-back days at the Jacksonville Classic, hosted by Flagler College. The tournament prior took place in a ballroom at the Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas, where the Knights topped Oklahoma State 60-56 in overtime for the program’s first win over a Big 12 Conference team. UCF advanced to the championship game and topped Santa Clara 57-50.

The Resort has become synonymous with world-class, authentic, southern hospitality. Founded in 1778, The Greenbrier is the premium vacation destination fit for any personality, from luxury shopping and dining experiences to championship-level golf and other outdoor adventures. In total, the resort features more than 55 indoor and outdoor activities, more than 35 retail shops, five golf courses, 20 dining and lounge venues, signature spa services and an on-property casino on more than 11,000 acres.
