Knights Men’s Golf Completes Day Two at Big 12 Match Play

HOCKLEY, Texas – On the second day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, UCF’s men’s golf team was within arm’s reach of a pair of wins, but a couple unlucky bounces swung each match in the opponent’s favor as Iowa State defeated UCF, 3-1-1, and West Virginia edged the Knights, 3-2, at The Clubs at Houston Oaks Golf Course.

Against Iowa State, Dianchao Wu defeated UCF’s Hans Risvaer to give the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead in the match and ISU’s Owen Sawyer edged Gustav Andersson, 2&1, to push the UCF deficit to 2-0. Egor Eroshenko earned a victory for the Knights, taking down Paul Beauvy, 1UP. Eroshenko grabbed the lead with three holes remaining and held on to register a point for UCF.

Big 12 Golfer of the Month Luke Gutschewski clinched the match for Iowa State, defeating UCF freshman Garret Ebbert, 1UP. Gutschewski grabbed the lead after winning hole three and held on for the victory. Nicholas Estrada and Zach May’s match was tied following 18 holes.

In UCF’s second 18 holes of the day, the Knights were edged by West Virginia, 3-2. Max Green gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage with a 3&2 win over Risvaer. With the match tied following the 10th hole, Green won holes 11-13 to clinch the victory. Nicholas Estrada answered for the Knights with a 3&2 victory against Carson Kammann. Estrada won the 11th, 14th and 15th holes to claim the win and knot the match at 1-1.

Ebbert carded a 2&1 win over Jackson Davenport to give UCF a 2-1 lead. The freshman was dominant throughout the match, as he led for 16 of the 17 holes played before clinching the match. With two matches remaining, West Virginia’s Todd Duncan defeated Eroshenko and Kaleb Wilson slipped past Andersson with 2&1 wins. Duncan won holes eight through 10 to take the lead and Wilson won 14 and 15 to record the win on the last two holes played.

UCF will conclude action in the Big 12 Match Play Tournament with a rematch against West Virginia on Wednesday with the match slated to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
