Chloe Scheer is entering her sophomore season as a libero for the UCF volleyball team. Playing in 16 of the 18 matches for the Knights in 2020-21, Scheer recorded 53 digs, 10 service aces, and 10 assists to help UCF win its third-straight conference title and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Scheer was also named to the dean's list in the spring of 2021. The Murrieta, California native reflects on her first year as a Knight and what she is looking forward to in this upcoming season. Here is what she had to say:
What have you been up to this summer?
I didn't get to go home, but I went to the (Florida) Keys with my roommate's family. I wanted to go to the Keys while living in Florida, so now I can check that off my list. We went lobstering out on a boat and I actually caught one. It was my first time doing that, so I can also definitely check that off my list of things to do.
It was a double whammy on the road trip because we had some teammates that were in Miami, so on our way back we stopped by and went to Miami Beach and South Beach. So I also got to check those off my list of places to go. Then we came back here and got right back into optional lift and now we are starting preseason. It was a good vacation, and it was nice to have time off to hang out with my teammates.
Freshman year: conference champions, NCAA Tournament appearance, pandemic - you've experienced it all: What are some of your favorite memories from this past year?
Going into the season, we didn't know that we were going to play in the spring. We were preparing in the fall for a season we didn't know when would start. And, coming in as a freshman, having it all switched around was hard. But I made my debut in January and I had so much support from my teammates and coaches. I went in and right away I got two aces back-to-back. The energy of that was amazing on top of playing in my first college game. We got through the season as a team and winning conference and going to the NCAA tournament as a freshman is the biggest blessing I could ask for.
From California to Florida, why did you choose UCF?
Florida and California are kind of similar states in the sunshine aspect and it's always hot. I am more of a beach girl myself and when I was given the opportunity to come to another beach state, it sounded perfect. Other than that, UCF came up out of no where during my junior year at the national tournament. I was playing Mary Beth (Headley), my roommate, who I didn't know at the time and (associate head coach) Brian (Doyon) was there watching her and saw me on the other side of the court. He liked me and reached out that day. A few weeks later, I was here and got to see the campus and loved it. I knew this is what I wanted in a school because it's one of the biggest, has a good football team and the coaches were absolutely amazing since day one. The girls took me in so quickly, too. I was a part of the family as soon as I came for my official visit. I fell in love with UCF very quick and it all happened within 3-4 weeks. So when I had the opportunity to come, it was an easy decision - this is where I wanted to go to school.
What are you most excited about for this upcoming season?
I'm excited to get back on the court to play and represent UCF while showing all the hard work I've put in. The biggest name on our schedule right now is Penn State. I think that is what we are all excited for and pushing for. There are a lot of other big ones like Georgia and Florida State, too. To get the opportunity to play one of those big schools is amazing and if we win, we can put our names up there. But Penn State is the game I am most excited for.
What is your major and why did you choose it?
When I first came to UCF, I was a business marketing major. I knew I wanted something in business, but I wasn't sure exactly because I was young. I switched majors at the end of last year to communications with a minor in sports business. I want to stay in the sports realm. The communications major leads to a lot of different places as well. I am working out the blueprints of it, but I plan to open my own gym with personal training and PT. That's my plan right now.
